On Perception

Okay wait, wait!!!
Before you FREAK OUT... Keep in mind this post is full of hyperbole and exaggeration. Also, know that I don't mean to imply that anyone is or is not built "curvy enough" or anything like that. In fact, I don't mean to imply that my or "everyone else's" viewpoint is more valid than the other. It's just different perceptions of the word and world.

And, also, I know that not EVERYONE ELSE actual thinks this way. Like I said, hyperbole and exaggeration. It's what makes comics funny.

But, my disclaimer now read, I truly have noticed that when people are describing to me a "curvy" girl I'm picturing something close to my depiction on the left above... only to have them show me a gal that more closely resembles the figure on the right. It's always rather a shock to see a very average to thin sized lady when I'm EXPECTING a remarkably voluptuous girl.

But, that's perception, for ya!

I doodled these ladies on my flight to SanFran. Did something a little different with my coloring this time, too. Just fooling around and having fun.
The XO Ball was WILD. I work alot of adult shows and they're usually fairly tame (in my opinion.) No nudity, no sex, no alcohol etc.

But this one, oh my... There was nudity, there was liquor and there was lots of unsolicited groping... I actually had to slap a guy who tried to grab my pussy while I was posing for a photo with him. What the fuck!
But, despite people getting a little out of hand I had a good time and made some friends. Plus, I was quite popular. I'd go again. :)

I've noticed I'm having some trouble juggling time between NB and time to dedicate to my more serious works, like my paintings. It's really frustrating as I would like to see progression with both but the paintings are MUCH more time consuming... This is what I've been working on lately:

She's a very large wooden cut-out. I have several more waiting to be painted. I want badly to get these finished so that I can begin showing my more serious work in galleries. I wish I could find a compromise between my free time spent on NB and my free time spent painting... yargh.

Your painting is beautiful! As are your comics always <3,maybe you could change your updates to once a week so you can work more on your paintings :) Just a thought

Ok, came close a few times, but I gotta comment as this seems to be a common subject. What most people (or at least the media) seem to call "curvy" is pretty much normal in my book. (Gaga gains 25 pounds and she still looks like she needs a cheeseburger or 3.) That includes your drawing. The wood cut is awsome by the way.

I actually like that your comic has lots of ladies of different sizes and none is more or less beautiful then the other. It also helps me feel pretty to see my body type represented in a way that's sexually desirable. ^_^; I think Comic!Nic is my height while IRL!Nic would tower over me. -A.M.

Hey, thanks A.M.!

It's my goal to show a variety of women and have them all still be cute, sexy, desirable and real. I'm lucky that I get to draw from the huge eclectic group of real women I work with and let some of their differences shine. :)

I Like curvy women, and i like skinny women. I just hate when bean poles do try to describe themselves as curvy. Both are beautiful as long as you are honest about it.

I HATE how confused the word "curvy" has gotten. To me, it means big boobs, small waist, big hips, and ANY weight or BMI. In a word...hourglass. Brittany of Thin and Curvy and June from Braless in Brazil (both are blogs) both fit this definition while having extremely different weights. Curvy should not equal overweight!

You may appreciate an upcoming Reaper Miniatures gaming figurine of a succubus. http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/previews/latest/03639

Response has been nearly entirely favorable.

Hmm, cut myself off there, struggling with Captcha.... The figurine is of a Rubenesque succubus, with some very round curves. Much closer to your first image than your second.

Anon, looks super hot! :D I am a fan!

I just found your web comic today and have caught up in a single day. I could not stop reading. I found the whole thing very interesting, witty and fun to read. I am looking forward to reading more! You gained another eager fan today!

My old grandfather used to say: belly, ass and tits are the perfect woman. And that is the plain truth

I am quite surprised too when people talk about "curvy" women (in French there is the same confusion with words as "ronde" or "pulpeuse") and then show me picture of average women(or sometimes just thin women with big boobs)... But, eh, maybe it's because I'm a fatty, so what is "thin" to me might be "plump" for others ^^

Anyway, I just love the mermaid ! Especially the colors !!! (And the look on the fish's face. It's just so funny !)It would be so cool if you could show us more of your paintings "out of the dungeon" !

@Nic - Glad that you liked that succubus. Not the standard seductive demon fare, but nicely zaftig. I gather that it is an experiment - to see if there is interest in more naturally proportioned miniatures. So far the response has been almost entirely positive. (With those disagreeing just being ignord for the most part.)

I like your "curvy" better.

Okay, whoa, just mainlined your comic pretty much from start to finish in two days, and I've gotta say, I love your explanatory posts for kink furniture and explanations of how the dungeon works... maybe it's different for other readers, but I'm finding that I want to broach more kink stuff with my boyfriend (we had some simple switchy handcuff play back at the start of our relationship, but it kind of petered out after a while) and I feel like I'd be less embarrassed showing him some of the super-cute pages of your comic to start this discussion than showing him any seriously hardcore porn or images that he might be initially intimidated by. It's a nice middle ground, I think, in that you've designed your comic to be safe for those who are vanilla-but-curious, which is my boyfriend to a tee.. I've always been the kinkier of us both - he'd never even had someone bite his lip before me! Thanks for giving me the confidence to broach it with him :) I'll report back and let you know how it goes.

Thank you Kinky Down Under!

Appealing to both the kinky and the vanilla is entirely my aim. :) I've seen alot of comics that cater to one group or the other but very little middle-ground. Educating AND entertaining is my goal and I'm really pleased to hear you find me accessible for both! :D Thanks!

So I guess my girlfriend and I are both curvy in different ways. Good to know! We'd actually been having (mostly drunk) arguments over whether I was curvy or she was. Solved by my favorite webcomic!

Glad to be of service, PT! ;P

I think some people also view "curvy" as the general way a person's body goes. Like the girl on the right is skinny, but she has curves, rather than some people who are more angular or have a body type that doesn't have much of a waist or something. Well not really waist, but like "rectangular" or "diamond" body shape. I think that how some people interpret it.

Hi Nic,
This is my first time commenting on your website but I would have to say that you continue to inspire me. I by any chance of the means am not a thin girl. I figure myself closer to your idea of curvy. When i found your Tumblr i actually noticed that we have somewhat similar shape minus the fact that i have a bit of a belly on me!

Thank you for drawing a variety of characters that show more than just one shape or size. Seeing how open you have been with it makes me feel a little better about my weight and body type (im around 5'2 with a very curvy body for a lack of better words. Big Boobs Thighs and Butt. :D ) sometimes when im down about my looks i come to look at your comic or tumblr to be reminded that no matter the shape or size that women are just beautiful. Before this gets any longer, I just want to say thank you so much :) You are very inspiring to me and I look forward to more!

Sincerely,

Brittni

Brittini,

Thank you so much. Hearing things like this is VERY uplifting to me. I'm glad that I can make you feel a little happier when you're feeling blue, that is a huge accomplishment to me and makes me feel very proud. I just hope that all ladies (and gents and everyone in-between) can reach a point where they feel good about themselves, including their bodies. <3

PS, I absolutely have a belly, too, I've just learned how to disguise it when I pose for photos, after years of doing so. ;) I should take a belly pic to show it off!
